My name is Jack Mauthe and like many people my age, I work a summer job. And I say this to kids my age: before you spend your hard-won earnings from lifeguarding, camp counseling, or scooping ice cream on sneakers or gas for your car, think about building something bigger for your future. The American economy has gotten itself into trouble many times because lenders are all too happy to over-lend and spenders are all too happy to overspend. A basic understanding of finance, even just balancing your checkbook, would be a huge step toward financial independence and security.
